Latchi, Paphos harbour, Protaras: three coasts, three kinds of boat day.
The Akamas lagoon is the one everybody comes for. The turtle cruises out of Protaras and the evening runs from Paphos harbour cost a third of the price and still have you back for dinner.
Paphos for the boats, Protaras for the water, Nicosia for the walls.
Six towns worth sleeping in, and the kind of day each one is best at.
Behind the beach strip, Cyprus climbs to nearly two thousand metres.
Troodos keeps medieval frescoes under timber roofs, the last commandaria vineyards and about ten degrees off the coastal heat. The jeep tracks into the Akamas leave from the same coast road.
The Cyprus days out that sell solid through July.

The lagoon, the wreck and the painted churches.
Turquoise water and mountain villages turn up all over the Mediterranean. A lagoon on an uninhabited peninsula, a car ferry lying on its side in forty metres of water, and medieval frescoes under barn roofs do not.

The Blue Lagoon
The peninsula at the top of the west coast has no resort, no road worth the name and a turtle beach at Lara, which is most of why the water in the lagoon reads the colour it does. Boats come up from Latchi and Paphos and anchor for an hour or two. The bus-and-boat combinations add the track over the headland, which is the part that rattles.

The Zenobia
A Swedish ferry left Larnaca in 1980, listed under a bad load and went down with its lorries still chained to the deck. She lies on her port side about a mile off the breakwater, and divers put her among the best wrecks anywhere. Certified divers go inside; everyone else starts with a shallow bay dive and looks at the photographs afterwards.

The painted churches
Ten small churches in the Troodos hills carry medieval wall paintings, kept dry by the steep timber roofs later built over them. They are still parish churches, so the opening hours belong to whoever holds the key, and the day tours out of Paphos and Limassol are built around that.

When the coast reads forty and the sea has stopped cooling anybody down.
July and August hand you two problems: an open archaeological site is unbearable by eleven, and the water is as warm as a bath. Cyprus answers both by going uphill, where Troodos runs about ten degrees cooler, or by moving the whole day to the evening.
